Spring & Summer Stunners Mix Part 2

This is my end of Summer mix with a definite nod to reggaelicious good times. The usual mix of old and new and plenty of sounds on the remix tip. Jungle Youth by Lee Scratch Perry gets a Congo Natty junglist rework from the 2011 Adrian Sherwood album “Nu Sound and Version”. The whole album is great so check it out.

I’ve also turned up the dancehall with a Conroy Smith classic and 2 reworkings of “Pumpkin Belly”, the latter by Gappy Ranks whose album I’ve been loving for over a year now. Non Jamaican niceness includes the dubby wonder of Resonators from the Wah Wah 45 label, Burial collaborating with Four Tet and Thom Yorke and a cheeky slice from Elbow’s latest album “Build a Rocket, Boys!”. There’s yet another Classixx remix, this time tuning up the niceness of Mayer Hawthorne’s “Green Eyed Love” single and a delicious slab of funk from Pimp Rekker courtesy of Norman Jay. Happy sunbathing…

1. Beware (Edit, Slight Return) ñ DJ Kentaro

2. Jungle Youth (Congo Natty remix) ñ Lee Scratch Perry

3. Dangerous ñ Conroy Smith

4. As We Enter ñ Damian Marley & Nas

5. Sofa featuring Pupa Jim (Wrongtom Remix) - Nextmen

6. Pumpkin Belly - Tenor Saw

7. Pumpkin Belly - Gappy Ranks

8. Can’t Stop Now (feat. Mr. Vegas & Jovi Rockwell) - Major Lazer

9. Mission & 24th - Pimp Rekker

10. Sweet Love Affair - Resonators

11. Mirror  - Burial, Four Tet & Thom Yorke

12. Jesus Is a Rochdale Girl - Elbow

13. Everything Is Everything - Booker T. Jones

14. Plutonius (Recloose Re-dub) - Dennis Coffey

15. Green Eyed Love (Classixx Remix) - Mayer Hawthorne

16. Gold Dub - Resonators

“No matter what the people say, this song leads the way…” Of course we lost King Stitt as well this week.. Only 6 years younger than my dad and a total reggae  and rudeboy legend. RIP King Stitt.

NME Mixtape Heaven

Remember those old copies of NME magazine in the 1980s that came with a tape of cool tunes? Vaguely? Yeh, me too. Luckily someone else does too, and even better, they’ve managed to scour the universe and collect them up so you and I can enjoy them too. So, if you’re jonesing for some House of Love, James, Haircut 100 or Defunkt, here you go…

Word from the Records Rappervisor

Our Records Supervisor knows he has the most boring job in the world. So if he has a mundane email notification about, I don’t know, photocopying or something, he likes to add a little flava. You know, like Grandmaster Flash would do…

It’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from goin’ under
It’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from goin’ under

Piles of paper everywhere
People send it to the printer,
Seems they just don’t care

We don’t need the volume, don’t need the stress

Got a job to do, don’t need to tidy up this mess
Try to do a print job, but just can’t get it out
Blockage in the output tray, it makes me wanna shout
I tried to get rid, but I couldn’t trace the owner
Got me so hyped up, and now the damn thing’s out of toner

Don’t push me cause I’m close to the edge
I’m tryin’ not to lose my head, ah huh-huh-huh

It’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from goin’ under
It’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from goin’ under

It’s not that people use it and print out what they do
It’s just they gotta think about it first, then pick their prints up too
Cause it all piles up, til there ain’t no room to move
And takin’ time to sort it out, just gets me outta groove
It’s a waste of paper, a waste of cash
A waste of time, and it just can’t last
It ain’t got no transmission, it ain’t got no ignition

Damn machine’s all outta action, gotta call the technician
Short fuse, excuse, I don’t wanna lose
Can’t make it go away, it’s gonna turn me to the booze
A psycho sideshow, feel I can’t know
How to just go with the flow, I swear, I don’t see where to go

Don’t push me cause I’m close to the edge
I’m tryin’ not to lose my head, ah huh-huh-huh
It’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from goin’ under
It’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from goin’ under

So if you’ve printed anythin’ out
And not collected it, then be in no doubt
You have until Friday, 4pm
To collect that sucka or it’s goin’ in the bin*
We won’t throw the prints that come on that day
But it’s time to tell you, it’s time to say
Please think before you print, and if you need to go ahead
But remember to collect it, and remember what I said
It’s a cost to the Council, cost to ratepayers
And if there’s one thing we don’t need, it’s a bunch of naysayers
Accusin’ us of wastin’ from an overflowin’ cup
Might not seem like much, but it all adds up
Children, parents, fathers, mothers
Silver tops, and students, even tree huggers
They say: “we pay, we’ll have our say”
So don’t be wastin’ all that paper, and we can make the grade
So print what you need, and print it once
Don’t hit the send again, just cause you have the choice
It all costs money, it all wears the parts
It increases all the downtime when the printer won’t start
It’s wastin’ our resources, so try to be keen
To remember the environment, remember to be green
It seems I send this message out every single year
And now it’s got me so mad that I’m tearin’ out my hair**
But now it’s time for me to move on

I got work to do, got to get back on song, so

Don’t push me cause I’m close to the edge
I’m tryin’ not to lose my head, ah huh-huh-huh

It’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from goin’ under
It’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from goin’ under

Got The Message?

Pete’s Winter Warmer Mix

So, here’s my Winter mix, calling it Pete’s Winter Warmer. Some electro, new and old(ish), some classic Sly & Robbie rhythms dubbed and DJ’d, and some funk, new and old. It includes a rare but stunning Gil Scott Heron cover by the heartbreakingly talented Esther Phillips, another rare and totally joyful slab of Black Ark goodness from Scratch and The Upsetters, and a surprise Rolling Stones throw-in, simply because I can.

Hoping this mix has a hint of the melancholy of a chill NZ winter with enough warmth to let you curl up and get comfortable.

1. 4D - Koreless
2. Jam Love Dub Prince Douglas
3. Dance Pon De Corner - Clive Field Marshall
4. Rolling in the Deep (Jamie XX Remix) - Adele
5. Long Enough - Candy Mackenzie & The Upsetters
6. Get Lively Now - Turntable Dubbers
7. Aidys Girl Is a Computer – Darkstar
8. The Eraser – Thom Yorke
9. Eyesdown – Bonobo Featuring Andreya Triana
10. Latch – Scuba
11. Pad Kontrol – Georgia Anne Muldrow
12. Home Is Where The Hatred Is – Esther Phillips
13. All Down The Line – The Rolling Stones
14. The World (Is Going Up In Flames) – Charles Bradley
15. Red Rooster – El Michels Affair
16. The Answer – Raphael Saadiq

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black

Her voice set her apart, no manufactured pop business here, that voice was real. No white Brit female vocalist since Dusty Springfield has managed to straddle real soul and pop so effortlessly. Sadly, the tragedy of her life eclipsed even Dusty’s. RIP Amy.
